How to keep a forex trading journal
A forex journal needs more than the pair and a win or loss. Keep the money result, size, time and reason together so a later review can explain what happened.
Record the pair, size and money result separately
Use a consistent pair label such as EURUSD. Record long or short, lot size, entry and exit prices, and the times from your statement. Add original planned risk in your profile currency and realized money P&L after deciding how fees will be recorded.
A pip move is not a money result. Size, quote currency and contract details affect the relationship. Use the broker's statement to confirm realized P&L rather than inferring it from prices alone.
| Keep in the trade | Keep in the notes |
|---|---|
| Pair, direction and lot size | The setup or entry condition you were observing. |
| Entry and exit prices and times | Session or event context, with a timezone. |
| Planned risk and realized P&L | Whether an exit differed from the recorded plan. |
| Commission convention | How spread, swap or other statement charges are reflected. |
Keep timezones consistent
Broker statements, chart screenshots and your profile can show different clock times. Record the timezone or an explicit timestamp offset when preparing an import. A note such as “morning session” is difficult to compare unless you know whose morning it was. MeowPips displays saved records using your selected profile timezone.
A worked forex record
Fictional USD example; not a setup recommendation. A completed EURUSD long has a recorded size of 0.10 lots, entry price of 1.1000 and exit price of 1.1020. The example statement reports a $20 gross gain and $2 total charges.
Final P&L = $20 − $2 = +$18. Planned risk recorded before entry was $10. The final result is $18 ÷ $10 = 1.8R.
If you enter +$18 as final P&L, do not deduct the same $2 again as commission. If your workflow uses gross P&L with a separate charge field, reconcile the final reported result with the statement.
Example note: “Entry followed my recorded condition. Closed earlier than the recorded target after watching a lower timeframe. Review other early exits before changing the routine.”
Review forex records by context
- Compare pair results with enough recorded trades to explain differences.
- Read session notes alongside entry times and their timezone.
- Check consistent treatment of costs and overnight charges.
- Keep practice, personal and prop-firm accounts in separate profiles when currencies or rules differ.
- Compare planned decisions with execution, including losses.
Do not conclude a session or pair is better from one or two trades. Use the journal to locate questions for review, not to turn a small sample into a prediction.
Use the free journal or CSV template
Start a free MeowPips journal and enter the pair, risk and statement result manually, or prepare a formatted CSV. Review parsed dates, direction and P&L before saving. Add context after import; the importer creates its own default note and rating.
MeowPips is a record-keeping tool. It does not connect to your broker to block orders, monitor live risk or determine contract values. Check free-plan limits.
